Find of the Day: Golden Earrings’ Cover “Rum and Coca Cola.”

Even though I’m pretty sure this is the same the Golden Earrings who would later go on to be just Golden Earring of “Twilight Zone” and “Radar Love” fame, I still have my doubts this is them. Though, they did do a cover of “Things Go Better with Coke” as well, so who knows.

But, yes, here’s the Golden Earrings performing the classic calypso tune “Rum and Coca-Cola.” Their Dutch-accent-meets-Trinidadian-affectation make the lyric “Workin’ for the Yankee Dollar” so much more fitting than the version done by the Andrews Sisters (which is just patronizing and offensive, really). Not to mention the bouncy rock rhythm.

And just for the fun of it, here’s their version of “Things Go Better with Coke” as well.

  1. Great find.
It’s simply because I’m of a certain age that I can tell you this:
It’s Golden Earring, singular, not EarringS.
Don’t mean to be a buzz kill. Great Blog!
